Our Beginning

Lanning Square School was built in 1963. This elementary school was named after Samuel Lanning first mayor of the City of Camden elected by City Council in 1828 and 1829. He resigned his position in February 1830, just before his term expired.

Samuel Lanning was a builder by trade and supervised the erection of Old City Hall on Federal Street in 1828. Also, he built a series of three-story brick row homes on the south side of Federal Street below Second Street. This area today is called Lanning Square and is zoned by the City as historical property. It is from this prominent developer that Lanning Square Elementary School derived its name.
