District/School Initiatives
School Process at Lanning Square School employs the extensive use of open dialogue and collaboration among the administration, the SLC, the entire school staff, the parents and the community to form consensus regarding priorities. Ongoing collection and analysis of data (demographic, student achievement, and perceptual) provides the basis upon which priorities, goals and objectives are formulated, established and implemented.
Lanning Square has fully implemented all District Initiatives including the Harcourt Brace Unified Curriculum in Language Arts Literacy, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Additionally, the District Uniform Program, the 120 Minute Literacy Block, and 100 Book Challenge and DIBELS assessments are fully implemented at all grade levels.
To further reinforce and extend District Initiatives, Lanning Square School employs the following strategies, programs, and activities.
Learning Centers
All classrooms have clearly defined centers which incorporate the use of technology and supplemental instructional materials aligned with NJCCCS
Classroom Libraries
Identified classrooms have been provided with 100 new titles for the current school year to insure that all classrooms have 300 books in their classroom libraries.
100 Book Challenge
The 100 Book Challenge provides students with the opportunity to choose literature as well as non-fiction selections which appeal to their individual interests and which are appropriately leveled. For the current school year, all grade levels, Kindergarten through Grade 6, including Special Education classes participate in the 100 Book Challenge.
Author's Conference
All students are required to participate in the yearly presentation of original compositions. Students develop a timeline for the implementation of the Writing Process to develop their books. All books are produced and prepared for display in June.
Author's Chair
Each building has a designated area with an Author's Chair where students are regularly provided the opportunity to read original pieces which they have written or particular items which they would like to share with other students, teachers, administrators and/or visitors.
Writer's Workshop
All students in grades two through six participate in daily writing exercises during a 60 minute writing block scheduled within the allotted Language Arts Literacy period. Students utilize the steps in the Writing Process to produce writing samples across the curriculum.
